I had good breaks going to work but when i left I had no breaks whatsoever, how can this happen?

What makes this problem better or worse?

if the car is off the breaks are hard, if the car is on they go all the way down

This is indicative of a failed brake system 'master cylinder' - OR - brake fluid leakage .. Check brake fluid level in master cylinder - IF that's ok - seek professional *hands-on* assistance as this is not a diy repair.

Same IF no brake fluid or it is extremely low.
