Why would the gauge cluster stop working after changing the cd player?

some of those wires just dead end in the radio/cd player plug(s) and if one of them gets cut,nicked,or spliced into it will cause gremlins..have seen some people that don't even unhook the battery negative cable before doing work in that area and short something out and then the vehicle won't start anymore...
