I was driving down the road and suddenly the transmission made a grinding noise and all the transmission fluid ran out.. The transmission oil pan got a hole in it... What causes this?

Either catastrophic internal transmission failure OR you ran over 'something' and knocked the hole in pan! .. Is the hole in pan an *innie.. OR ..an outie*.. ??

I'll go with the second scenario , unless it's the ring gear that popped!
