Hello, your fuel pump provides static fuel pressure to the engine and will not cause more fuel consumption. Spark plugs must be the right application and gapped properly of course. But typically, when you are using more fuel, it is because the engine's processor is calling for it due to its determination that there is a whole lot of air getting into the engine for some reason. This could be valid -- that there is a vacuum leak or air intake leak of un-metered air getting into the engine. Or, it could be the result of inputs such as mass air flow information. Testing must be performed to find out what is going on. Trouble codes, if any, must have troubleshooting performed. As this vehicle is OBDI, it's a little less forthcoming and a little more difficult to diagnose than the newer vehicles 1996 and newer, but still can be done with proper equipment and know-how. And no guess work.
Recommend re-calculating fuel mileage for a couple tanks .. You may find it is still in line with the ratings for that vehicle.. IF too much fuel is actually being burned during combustion - you should see BLACK smoke from tail pipe..
Many times I THINK my Chevy blazer (same engine) is consuming too much gas!
