Interior lights dimmed stereo turned off headlights turned off then when stopping the car turning the car off it would not start again
What makes this problem better or worse?
Jumping car helped.
How long has your 1997 Oldsmobile 88 had this problem?

Voltage regulator is inside the alternator .. Not serviceable for the DIYer .. Recommend hands-on charging system testing - by qualified personnel.
The voltage regulator is internal to the alternator. Perform a charging system test, starting with the battery and moving on from there to the alternator for output to figure out the problem.
