Hello, brakes get serviced / replaced when 1 or more of the pads are worn close to the wear indicators, or approximately 1-2 millimeters to the backing plate. This is based on physical inspection, not a mileage interval. It is a good idea to have the brakes visually inspected when the tires are rotated, which is usually around every 5,000 miles / 8,000 km or so.
Additionally - IF you reside in a state that has an annual vehicle safety inspection program - brake wear inspection is part of the 'required' procedure. However it never hurts anything to have them checked more frequently - this especially true if any unusual noise is heard while braking or the service brakes ability to effectively slow / stop the vehicle is noticed. IF there is ever any doubt - have brakes checked by qualified personnel immediately .. NOTHING can take the place of a vehicles brakes!
