Car won't start. What could be the problem?

Hello, my car is a 2010 Nissan Rogue (CVT transmission). Last night I've accidentally tried to start a car while it was already running. I heard a grinding noise and immediately stopped the engine. Then I have tired to start it again and the car did start with no problems whatsoever. The next morning the car would not start, the engine still sounds like it spins, just does not start. The dashboard lights still do go on, however are glitching (go on and off). Is the more likely cause of the problem a dead battery or a damaged gear? If it is the gear what would that part be called on CVT transmission?
