What is your question?
It started happening after 100, 000 miles. My husband managed to fix it manually a couple of times by playing with the 2 switches beneath the steering wheel, which was affecting the brake light. However, the service people say the problem is in the engine, "losing compression" and they insist it should be replaced for $11K. My gut is telling me it is something minor related to electricity conduction. I love this car, it was so reliable for the first 6 years, I do not want to sell it. When the problem with the engine staring appears, the brake pedal feels "stiff" when I press and it does not go all the way down. Any ideas?
What makes this problem better or worse?
sporadical occurence

Does the starter motor CRANK the engine ok when attempting to start BUT the engine does not start up ? OR - the starter will not CRANK the engine at all when attempting to start ?
Unfortunately the problem must be present before it can be discovered - by anyone. When this issue is present - I recommend bleeding a small amount of brake fluid from the lines that are attached to master cylinder - if brake pedal travel is then normal - I suspect a failing master cylinder that’s preventing the pedal from traveling normally - of course this is purely a guess however it’s not much else that can cause the pedal to become difficult to depress.. I would check out some local independent auto repair facilities - often times the dealerships technicians do not think out of the proverbial box.. Obviously some-thing else needs to be done here. Good luck!
The previous suggestion should be performed by qualified personnel. ( The master cylinder can indeed cause this problem! ) TESTING will lead to a reliable repair solution.
The starter must CRANK the engine before the engine will START. Brake pedal hard to depress indicates you are experiencing a CRANKING problem as opposed to a STARTING problem - the brake pedal must be depressed BEFORE the engine will CRANK so the engine can then START. This make any sense? Perhaps **hands-on** assistance from qualified personnel is needed.. Nobody ever uses the reply feature here so - Good luck to ya!
Asa side note - engine compression will not come and go - it is either there or it is not - period.
Thank you so much for validating my suspicions that the service staff are fooling me around. And you are correct - there is NO cranking from the engine; it feels like the breaking pedal freezes at 60% and thats it. It would not go down all the way for the engine to respond. And my car has been in the shop for 40 days already for "hands-on" assistance. The place is official Nissan representative. I am stuck. Who should I find?
Pushrod, thank you so much for your helpful suggestions. My husband is very handy with vehicles and I am sure he will get a major epiphany from your "hints".
It has GOT TO BE brake fluid PRESSURE that’s preventing normal pedal travel - intermittently.. Let us and others know the final outcome.
