don't know about re-wiring the car,but look at the switch,to check for alignment,loose,or broken.you can also unplug it,check the switch with a meter,checking continuity> by pushing the plunger in and out, or jumper the connector with a small piece of wire to see if they are working that way with a helper watching the brake lights.
Thanks for that; I will try that and see if it works. Someone had mentioned the car might need rewiring.
