My mitsubishi lancer gli 1998 is making a loud screeching noise

In the past couple of days randomly while I've been driving my car has started to making a loud screeching noise that seems like it is coming from the drivers side. When it happened last my rear demister light half came on and when I turned it on then off the noise stopped? It continuously happened until I finally gave up and left the demister on for a while. I turned it off and it didn't happen again for the last 5 minutes of my drive. What does this mean?
