You would have to fully charge the battery, then check the charging voltage and amperage output from the alternator. Checking the voltage can be done with a voltmeter, but performing the other tests (battery load test and alternator output test) needs to be done with a special tester. I would have a shop perform these tests, it takes just a few minutes and should be relatively inexpensive.
