What is your question?
I was just wondering if the belt near the engine breaks does that mean the values are ruined? I was told that my car has a intermittent engine..which in that case the value would not be ruined.?
What makes this problem better or worse?
..
How long has your 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse had this problem?

IF the *TIMING BELT* fails - The engine will no longer operate! .. IF the engine would still start and run at all - The timing belt wasn't the problem to start with... Just saying.
Hello, There are a couple of belts that you have to be concerned with on your vehicle. I believe it only came with the 4 cyl engine in 1997, so you should have a timing belt that cannot be seen without removing covers, and you should have one or more accessory drive belts, which run the alternator, power steering pump, and any other mounted accessories. If one of the visible belts breaks, you replace it, and you are on your way, though you may have to charge the battery. If the timing belt breaks, that is, the belt with teeth all around it that you cannot see, you probably have damage to the valves - at least.
Thanks for your reply..When my water pump went my son changed all my belts except the one next to the engine..(its the belt to the left of the engine and visible and yes its a non turbo 4 cyl engine) what happen was I was at the shore and the car just started shaking and stalled..I had it towed to my apartment and I look at the belt and it didn't snap it was just dye rotted and stretch out which of coarse is the same as it snapping..I was told without seeing the car by mechanics that the car was no good cause when that happens it damages the valves..But with that said I traded the car (and got a lemon :-( but I did get my money back but the guy I traded it to told me my car only cost 300 to fix cause it has what's called a non-interference engine and it don't damage the valves cause piston does not travel into any area into which the valves open and he told me the mechanics knew that and were trying to rip me off..So with that said I was just trying to find the truth so I know not to go to the mechanic that told me that..
Did you read what I said? I said when I was driving it the car stall and yes it did not work nor would it start so I towed it home and started to make my calls...I didn't have a mechanic look at but I called and ask them how much it would cost to fix the belt..that is when they said it they were positive it ruin the valves so I believe them and traded the car and after I did the guy I sold it to,sold it to someone else and said my engine has a non Interference Engine and no not with 2 cam shaft to where if it had them it would of ruin the valves..When the timing belt goes with a Non interference Engine the piston does not travel into any area into which the valves open so in that case I got rip off.Why would you say it wasn't the timing belt? I might be a female but I can put on the makeup and be glamours and I can put on the tool belt..Just saying I seen the belt...and it was like I said still intact but worn out..
Merry Christmas!
