Turn key won't start hit starter then starts do i have to change starter or

if the starter motor wouldn't spin the engine by you turning the key to crank it ,then you had a helper turn the key while you smacked the starter with say a hammer or some object and the starter tried to spin the engine or did attempt to crank the engine over,then replace the starter.
