I can get the car to run, however, when I put it into gear, it shuts off??

1 - Throughly clean throttle body .... 2 - Closley check PCV valve system for possible vacuum leaks due to 'mushy' - deteriorating hoses @ ALL connections.. Note that some of the vacuum hoses are very inconspicuous on this engine and throttle body cleaning needs to be done properly, so you may need some hands-on help from someone whom is familiar with these problems .. (May possibly find some help from YouTube videos) .. Lastly - Is the check engine light on?
