My air conditioning is working intermittenly and sometimes not at all in my 2005 Montego. I have been told that it is the compressor. Comments/help?

Could be the compressor But I would have a shop remove and replace the freon first just to be sure that the right amount of freon is in the system and they can tell you if your compressor is bad, You can get estimates here www.repairpal.com/estimator and locate a shop here www.repairpal.com/directory
I have the same car...at first they thought it was the ac evaporator valve after replacing that it was the compressor. I treated this car very well. At 5 yrs replaced 5 yr coolant , oil changes etc. I took this car to Tasca , Lincoln Mercury/Ford. They found the problem after spending $238 dollars. Shit Now the new compressor will be costing me $800. My car only has 39000 miles on it.
Had to have our compressor replaced this summer on our 2005 Montego - about $900 - The mechanic said it is mounted down low and it tends to get extra "gunk" in it - they have come up with a saying... "down low, it's gonna go" . This is my only complaint about the car.
