Why would my 2008 not want to shitft out of 1st gear eventually it does shift but itshifts hard

What is your question?

When im driving my 2008 mercury mariner the wrench light on the dash is on and its delayed shifting it wants to stay in 1st and whines real hard before it finally shifts and begins to drive normally

What makes this problem better or worse?

Nothing except accelerating then it will shift
