I was driving down the road it made a clunking sound I pulled over immediately and it died when I tried to restart it the engine sounded like it was cranking but the belts were not moving what could be the problem

Remove the distributor cap, have helper crank engine to see if dist rotor is turning .. IF it is not rotating.. and based on you description.. Most likely suspect is a broken crankshaft... >> = (ENGINE)!
Well that's yet to be determined by testing.... However IF the crankshaft is indeed broken.. Engine block 'line bore' has more than likely been compromised... (Block out of alignment).. It can be checked and corrected if necessary but is fairly expensive to do so! .. Therefore, engine replacement would be the best way to go (IMO).. Good luck with it in any event! .. Let us know what is found.
So it is basically a shot motor and will need a complete rebuild or a new engine if the crank is shot?
