if you have to buy tools and ask these questions maybe you should save time and money and have it done.sorry but you will spend more than it will cost
Only changing 12 plugs?, , the 430 has 16 (Two per cylinder)Surprised no one corrected Eddie
I know its an old question, but all it received were snarky answers. Sure the question is a bit HUGE, but I suspect it is more basic. Bottom line, general maintenance on an MB is usually pretty easy and in fact was designed so. Fluid/filter changes, spark plugs, brakes, general electrical, most mechanical. Will it need any special tools, well that all depends on how many other cars you have worked on and how complete your tools are. Almost all cars, since the 20's have a tool or four that are somewhat 'special', or at least make it easier, for specific models/brands. In this case the internet and Youtube, is your friend. Read, watch, learn, and ask specific reasonable questions (How do I work on my car and do I need special tools is neither - like saying I have a machine made of thousands of parts, how do I work on it and what tools do I need). As for those that are afraid because they are stuck on the nostalgia train, are blinded by a few examples. Most basic maintenance is easier, and now even sensors tell you they failed (often almost precisely) with an inexpensive reader. A tune up does not require jets and balancing of carb(s), no setting of Dwell balancing with Point(s) Gap, during the tweaking of Timing, Now, change plugs and Air Filter, drive car for a few minutes, done. Total Time on an MB430, 1.5-2hrs. Read, Watch, Look at Car, ask pertinent questions on reasonable forums, and good luck.
Im looking to maybe buying a ml430 benz but I feel uts ridiculous that to do a basic tune up cost you an arm a leg and maybe a lung.. I have tools but these engines they make now they make it almost impossible to work on there for forced to take to a dealership... I jyst want to do my own spark plugs, oil changes things of that nature.. $500-600 to change out 12 PLUGS??? Really??
let me adv u that you are buying a used mbz and in my opinion they are money pits after 40k miles. they are a great car to lease and get rid of at 36k miles. if you buy it i feel it will be the worst decision of you life. this is a rich persons car and most normal people don't realize that, they cost alot to repair and normal maint as you are finding out.
I was thinking the same.. thank you for the great advice which Ill take.. I just really need a dependable 3 ROW SEATING FOR MY FAMILY.
try a suburban or tahoe but remember the transmissions only have a life of approx 100 to 150k miles if not taken care of by prior owner. you are so welcome for the advise. be safe
