What is your question?
The cd player has stated coming when the engine is shut off. Will not shut off or will hesitate before it starts to play. Will not always exit the CDs. Sometimes it won't play the tracks that are selected. Will just shut off with not warning and the restart the same way. Draining car battery because it won't shut off when you think it's off. Is there a recall on the stereo systems? This is now beginning to affect the radio. Now you can smell something burning if the systems stays on for more than twenty minutes. This is getting scary.
What makes this problem better or worse?
Yoy have to make sure to turn the stereo system off completely. Must have no power on so that the stereo doesn't come on by itself and drain the battery.
How long has your 2003 Mazda Tribute had this problem?
A couple of of months.

No recalls for this. This sounds like an internal concern with the audio unit. Keep in mind that the unit will remain powered to insert or remove CD's at any time. Therefore, if there is some kind of internal concern, it can continue to run the battery down. As a temporary fix, you could remove the fuse for the audio unit so it does not work at all. But there is either an internal issue or a wiring concern. Testing and tracing it all down is needed.
Manually switching radio itself OFF should stop ALL functions.. Suspect the audio unit (radio) has an internal failure and replacement is likely the best cure.. IF shopping for a replacement - Google > Crutchfield They also have free technical advice - can’t beat em!
Additionally - I’m thinking there should be an accessory power down module that is supposed to cut power to all accessories after a predetermined amount of time after key has been removed .. Opening any door should do the same thing as far as the radio .. Vehicle may not be equipped with that particular option. However the other problems you are having - turns off and on intermittently - tends to point directly towards a failing radio.. Assuming this radio is indeed a factory - original equipment unit (?) Good luck!
