As I started driving after being at a light, I heard a loud clunk and the the AWD started flashing on and off for about one mile until it disappeared

I was stopped at red light and I began to drive the car made a loud clunk sound and the AWD flashed on and off the dashboard until it stopped flashing after driving one mile. This morning while driving on some ice the AWD started flashing and it seemed like I lost traction from two wheels. Then every thing went back to normal.
