Mazda323bj shut off suddenly and won't start

So I assume gas ran out as I just bought the vehicle and thegiage isn't working while trying to reach a gas station the vehicle just died I'm getting lights horn ect cars cranking but won't start

How long has your 1994 Mazda 323 had this problem?
