cruse control problem

What is your question?

I must depress the turn on switch on the steering wheel 20-30 times in order for it to turn on. Once it is finally turned on the cruse control engages and works properly. I assume there is a pick of a relay to activate this function and the relay is not picking every time. Am I right or wrong in my diognose??? A wiring diagram of this circuit would help, a part # of the relay and its location would also help. Please respond with any help you may have to solve MY problem. Thanks Bob

I think the contacts on your switch may be dirty or not in good shape. There is no relay, the signal goes from the switch through the clockspring then to the PCM which controls the throttle body to maintain speed. Like I mentioned I think your switch may be bad.

Agree with prof. There are two wires which come from the PCM one providing a voltage signal, the other a ground connection, and each of the cruise switches close a different resistor value in-between these two circuits so that the PCM can see what you are commanding. The system must see the on command in order to allow any other the other inputs, so without it you have nothing. The IDS scan tool can report the switch input data to help confirm the expectation that the switch assembly is failing.

I have ordered new switches from Amazon.com. The exact factory replacement Motorcraft part #SW-6165 for my 2005 lincoln town car. I still could use some help in removing the air bag as these switches are mounted on the front left face of the stearing wheel. In looking at the underside of the stearing wheel I see 4-holes, 2-on each side of the air bag, BUT I can't see any screws in these 4- holes. Is it possable that they are so recessed that I cannot see the heads of the screws??? Is it possable that the screws are allen or bristal screws??? I could not find a video of a removel proceedure of the air bag for my vehicle. Thank you all fo your past help with MY problem and I hope some one can help me with the air bag removel. schaffer 80
