When this happens, check to see if brake lights are working.. You'll need a helper!.. Someone should be within hollering distance... Possible (intermittent) stoplight switch or wire connector failure... You can turn key to the *ON* position then back just a tiny bit.. Shift from park into neutral.. Start engine, shift into desired gear and drive on.
For a Mercedes Benz ML320 1998-2003 & E320 4Matic 1998- 2003 (This worked on both my SUV & SEDAN) Inside the cabin, there is a Small Black Square on the base of the gear shifter console. Mercedes Benz Emergency Roadside Assistance advised me to "stick a pencil or pen down there"with one hand firmly into that spring loaded trap door until you feel resistance, while simultaneously using the other hand on the shifter to gently release the gear shifter. If it does not release- Leave the Allen wrench in the hole and try turning the wheel while trying to firmly BUT- NOT forcefully move the gear shifter and that should release the gear shfter. IF NOT SUCCESSFUL - HAVE CAR TOWED TO YOUR MECHANIC (I actually used an Allen wrench because if the pencil or pen breaks off there will be bigger problems!) This probably happened to me 7 -10 times a few years ago on both vehicles and it has not happened since. I keep the Allen wrench in the ashtray incase of emergency. Hope this helps! Donna
