Do I need to replace the water pump if it's leaking water

I just purchased a 2007 LINCOLN MKX. And was told that it's leaking water from the water pump. I drove it 15 miles and it didn't show a sign of leaking water, nor over heating. Could this be something simple? How do I know what the issue is? Do I need to replace the water pump? And is there a warranty I may can purchase to cover this issue?
What makes this problem better or worse?
