Car starts put in gear rpms increase car wont move

Check engine light 2 wks. On. Noticed it was not shifting properly. Came off of the freeway turned into a parking lot chug chug sputter. Turned it off started put into gear grinding. Moved very slowly while sputtering. Turned it off. Started it put into gear rpms increase when i press gas pedal but car won't move. Please tell me it is not the transmission. It was just smogged. It passed.
