Are the 2 "valve cover" gaskets the same thing as 2 "oil pan" gaskets?

We were chasing an oil leak. "Upper and lower valve cover gaskets" were replaced. Three years later "upper and lower oil pan gaskets" were replaced. Was this a duplicate repair? Finally fixed the oil leak with a timing belt package.
