Why do I have to engage the hold button located on the shifter to start moving

from a dead stop? only to click it again @ around 5mph to power mode to continue and when cold trans wont shift into 3rd easily and now its slipping when I reach 45-55mph

BEFORE you are left stranded , it might be a good idea to bring it to a transmission (or general repair shop) and have the TRANSMISSION control module scanned for codes , and decide if it is worth exploring further actions to remedy.
