the wheel makes a screeching sound during left turns. and more and more when I go straight. when I tap the breaks the noise stops. what do you think could be wrong

That is indicative of worn disc brake pads - there is a metal tab (wear indicator) located on the brake pads that will make this "screeching sound" and will do so in the manner in which you have described - it is designed to alert the vehicle operator that an inspection of brake pads is required.
