If you remove the bolt it MUST be replaced and the dealer is the only supplier!.. Proper torque is CRITICAL!!.. I've never seen one fail until it has been removed.... Then if not replaced with a new bolt and *properly torqued*... it will fail... I've fixed a few and every time that turned out to be the case..
The bolt is defective. Kia was sued and there is a limited class action that covers new car buyers up to 100k miles and used car buyers up to 60k. The bolt is too small for the application. Kia came out with a different bolt. Torquing the bolt wont help when the bolt snaps because the pulley and the forces on it are greater than the bolt can withstand. The lawyer handling the class action is www.lawrep.net
Thanks for the law suit tip and sharing *your professional opinion* on this matter... FYI, as for these vehicles I have repaired, no more problems with the crankshaft components have arisen! .. Good luck to 'ALL' parties concerned!
That is what i needed. Thow it does not sound like kia is standing behind the problem on this one. Seems i should do routine inspections to stay on top of this. Any advice on what to whatch out for. Other than a wobbly pulley on the main crank
I really don't think Kia is to blame!.. Every one that I've had to fix had been removed and put back in without enough torque... Now it may be some cases of the factory bolt breaking but I've not see it... So I guess if it's not been removed.. no worries! IF it is removed, install a new bolt and tighten the damn thing up!!.. I even use a drop or two of red Loctite!.. There's a vid on YouTube that shows some --- working on one that says the locator pin broke and that's what is causing the problem.. What a DA... The pin sheers off when the bolt gets loose!
Thanks. Bolt not removed, so i will take that as good omen. I just need to investigate to find out if bolt was done at time of recall.
