Seems to be struggling going uphill. I don't drive much so wonder if the other gears would help
What makes this problem better or worse?
It seems to stress going uphill? Would moving to + or - help?

The automatic transmission should shift - well 'automatically' when a lower or higher gear is needed .. There may be an engine performance issue or transmission problem that needs to be checked out *hands-on* by qualified personnel.. Keep in mind this vehicle has a pretty small displacement engine ..... Just saying.
