Took to shop, they said it needs another coil. What the heck is making the coils go bad??? Upvote (23) Flag inappropriate 2011 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder I have had 3 coils go out and two of those were in the first year. Once again my check engine light is on and I'm terrified to drive it due to the issues with the coils. I also bought this car brand new and I can not wait to get rid of it! Upvote (13) Flag inappropriate 2009 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder 164,000 mi, Visitor I am out of warranty and replacing my 3rd Ignition Coil. I have always paid to have it fixed. They started failing about 2 years after I purchased my car new. I need to look into replacing these myself. The $250. at the shop is not worth it if the part is under $20.00. Upvote (9) Flag inappropriate 2011 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder DOHC 28,000 mi, Visitor Check engine light on and engine vibration when started and running. This is the second time this year. Last time I had a problem it was the ignition coil.i only have 28000 miles on it. Upvote (6) Flag inappropriate 2011 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder 76,000 mi, Visitor My check engine light came on and my car started to shake real bad and sometimes stall out. I took it to the dealership and they replaced 2 of my coils free of charge. About two to three months later I started having the same problem again so I took it back to the dealership. They replaced the third coil. About a month ago it started back up again and called them and said since its out of warranty I would have to pay for it to be replaced but when I took it in to get the third coil I asked them to just change the fourth one too since I was there and they wouldn't. I have had nothing but problems with this car. I'm so ready to get a new car that isn't a KIA. Upvote (4) Flag inappropriate 2008 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder DOHC 94,000 mi, Visitor Had same problem with #2 at 94000 mi. and paid 84 dollars for the coil. So far the rest have held up Upvote (2) Flag inappropriate 2011 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder 60,000 mi, Visitor The car wouldn't start. When I took it to the dealer they replaced both ignition coils because I was only a few miles over the warranty. Upvote (2) Flag inappropriate 2010 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder replaced on average at least 2 a year since I bought it new in 2010.They are easy to change,However it is BULLS___ that this is happening.WHY ?????????????? Upvote (1) Flag inappropriate 2011 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder 31,000 mi, Visitor I have had to change THREE of the engine coils. Luckily it's all under warranty so it costs me nothing but time and aggravation at the dealer. The dealer said that usually all four have be replaced and then it should be fine and it is A fairly common problem with Kia Rios. They also said they usually go out every six-ish months. Which has proven to be true thus far. I will be trading it in far before the warranty runs out. Upvote (1) Flag inappropriate 2010 Kia Rio - 1.5L 4 Cylinder 68,000 mi, Visitor Over the past 2 years we have replaced ignition coils 11 times (2 this week alone) Each coil has been replaced at least twice, some have been replaced 3 times. Something is causing these coils to go bad. Upvote Flag inappropriate 2009 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder 106,000 mi, Visitor Have had the same problems with the coils....I think I will purchase four and just leave them in the trunk with the tools to switch them out....Takes all of 10 minutes to replace the coils....cost $250 when the dealership does it! Upvote Flag inappropriate 2011 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder 47,337 mi, Visitor Cylinder 1 was mIsfiring changed cOil it worked fine since Upvote Flag inappropriate 2011 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder 50,000 mi, Visitor My Mother has had the same problem with her 2011 Kia Rio since she bought the car. Here is my best solution for anyone with this problem. Replace them Often! Save yourself the $100 price tag PER COIL ! from the dealer not to mention there labor on top of that ! Go to Amazon and buy the same quality ones for $ 16.30 EA If they are going to fail often then better off spending less and budget them in under regular maintenance. For those DIY people. Very easy repair! REMEMBER TO USE ELECTRIC GREESE FOR THE CONNECTORS! Upvote Flag inappropriate 2009 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder 58,576 mi, Visitor Stopped at light-check engine light went on and car started to shake. Replaced all 4 coils The dealer knew what the problem was before they even put the car on the computer to be diagnosed because it is such a common problem with this car. I don't understand why this isn't a recalled item Upvote Flag inappropriate 2011 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder They replaced 2 coils for free, now a new one went out. They now won't pay for it b/c the car is apparently 5,000 miles out of warranty. Upvote Flag inappropriate 2011 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder 28,438 mi, Visitor miss on #1 cylinder after warm up, replaced coil Upvote Flag inappropriate 2011 Kia Rio - 1.6L 4 Cylinder 48,000 mi, RLW860 I purchased this vehicle because I was tired of purchasing used vehicles and having to make repairs all of the time. I have had to have the ignition coils replaced 2 times within the last year. This wouldn't be a bug deal if each coil wasn't $100+ to replace! I do not recommend this vehicle at all.
Mine has been in shop 3 times for ignition coils. First time had less tha 10 thou and 2nd time year later 3 time year after that. It is a 2011 only has 60 thou miles all highway. Been maintenanced and oil changes. Been kept up dont understand cant keep shelling out 700 dollars
My Kia just started having the ignition coil issues the day before yesterday. When I got to work I asked a friend of mine who has the same make and model a question about the coils, and before I could finish asking her if she'd had issues she told me her address as doing mg the exact same thing. Apparently this is an example sue that really needs to be looked into. I just had a tune-up and spark plugs done with the n this car and now this crap!! What really scares me is I'm not through paying for it and I already have so many questions
Please overlook all the mistakes in my previous comment. I didn't read it before I posted on here. Thanks
Well, the problem looks like it ain't going away.so, IF your cars are going to keep eating coils and you're gonna keep it/them,why in the world would you pay $700.00 for 4 ignition coils, when you can buy ALL 4 on E-bay for less than $30.00,Free Shipping with a Lifetime Warranty? this person has sold 899 of these sets of 4 (3,596 coils) and has a Positive Feedback Score of 99.9% out of 14,541 sales! good luck...
I just dont know how to fix myself i would if could. If easy to fix i will try.
