1999 XJ Cherokee looses electrical power

Turn the key to "ON" position, the dashboard lights come on. Turn key to "START" position, EVERYTHING goes dead. Let it sit a while, the lights come back on. Try to start it again and everything goes dead again. Nevermind, I need an answer quicker than 48 hours
