In my 1996 XJS it's in the trunk above the battery. You have to remove a panel.

Oops, just joined this site. In my 1990 Jaguar XJ-S Classic Collection the power unit for the convertible top is located in the lockable compartment where a back seat might have been placed ... for elves.
