Usually the metal antenna mast is attached to a flexible plastic cable that has teeth on one side that is driven by the motor gear. This is a general answer and may not apply to all vehicle makes and models.
Thanks for the reply. I have that info already given that I replaced one (toothed) on a BMW. What I need to know is about the Trooper, smooth or toothed so that I purchase the correct antenna shaft.
You only have to disassemble the one without teeth. The one with teeth you slide out the old, partially install the new, turn on the radio, it will pull itself rest of the way. I'm just trying to save time & extra work by finding out which I have. Thanks for your time.
