Should a steering rack need replaced at 54000 miles?

2009 Infiniti G37xS has 54000 miles on it. I've taken very good care of this car. Now the local nissan dealership is telling me that the steering rack needs replaced at a tune of $2,438.00.

I feel sure the dealership explained WHY steering rack replacement was necessary - what was that explanation?? Otherwise we have no idea which direction to proceed. Good luck!
