Was driving on highway when steam/smoke came from under hood smelling like antifreeze-check engine light came on and engine started knocking-had car towed and was told there was a hole in the radiator by car repair shop. 2010 FX35
How long has your 2010 INFINITI FX35 had this problem?
Happened on highway where smoke coming out of hood smelling like antifreeze and check engine lite came on and car engine geared down

Well a HOLE in the radiator is like having a HOLE in a bucket - if there is fluid in the bucket - it leaks out!
A radiator can have leaks due to holes caused by seam failures from corrosion or manufacturing issues, or some kind of debris may have struck it -- although that's not as common, as the air conditioning condenser sits in front of the radiator and would take the brunt of any impact. Unless -- some kind of debris damaged both components. Still, physical damage is possible, and the definite cause would be more approachable with a physical hands on inspection, something we (of course) can't do here.
What I meant is how often do radiators get holes?! Idon’t have a hole in my head so I do know a hole would leak
My bad - I ‘somehow’ misinterpreted your question ..... It is not uncommon for a radiator to fail due to age - road hazards - various engine cooling system failures or neglect. You stated the engine started knocking - also car engine geared down - did the engine get *extremely hot* during this episode? Reason for asking is - there ‘may be’ internal engine damage IF the engine severely overheated .... Just so you’re aware of that possibility. Good luck with it!
