What is your question?
Looking for the opening (intake) for fresh air. If I can find the inlet I will screen it off just to be sure. I have no oak trees nearby so I suspect shells came with the car.
What makes this problem better or worse?
New cabin air filter
How long has your 2015 Hyundai Elantra had this problem?
Rattling from the blower fan was from acorns

Actually it is mice that have deposited those items in your HVAC system! .. It’s a very common occurrence that we see quite often at the shop.. You have a good idea but the screening material will need to be a bit more rigid than the ordinary screen door variety Turn key on and blower on high - listen on passenger side with hood raised and you should be able to locate the fresh air inlet from the roaring sound. Good luck with the mice!
Thanks for the quick response Pushrod. I sure do hope the whole situation was from the previous owner. The car is low mileage and spotless (well, it was until now). Again, there are no oak trees near me at work or at home so I will keep my fingers crossed and follow your good advice. I think I will also pull that new cabin filter and the blower motor out and blow it all out with compressed air. Again thank you for the (horrifying) info… p.s. NO mice allowed here.
This problem seems to be more pronounced in our locations this time of year when it starts cooling down outside - the rodents discover the engine bay is warm and decide to make a home there.. This may very well have occurred while the vehicle was in the previous owner’s possession. It is extremely difficult to keep the little critters out of any vehicle though.. I’m certain google will have some information about some remedies people have attempted. I’m in VA. just down the road a ways, so we have the same issues with the cooler weather's influence on this concern.
