Why wont my car go into drive?

Will it not shift, as in the shifter is locked? Many systems need to see the brake lamp input to release the shifter, so check to see if the brake lights work. From there the problem could be with the release solenoid. They often get gummed up from drinks spilling down into the console. There should be a manual release.
