How should a GDI engine be maintained to prevent carbon buildup?

I have a 3.3l v6 lamba2 GDI engine and from my research, their biggest problem is carbon build up. Ive seen sprays that you use to clean the carbon, shops that will walnut blast the engine, etc. What is the best way to maintain these. Is there maintenence needed?
