The check engine light is now coming on. Should I not drive the car? I have 40 miles to my dealer.

That is a difficult question to answer as there is no way of knowing why the light is on until the computer is scanned to see what trouble codes are stored. As long as you do not experience any obvious drivability concerns or any change in how the vehicle performs, then yes, it should be OK. Local independent auto repair facility should be very capable of taking care of this issue for you. Maybe there’s no need to drive the 40 miles to your dealership. I’d at least have them perform *hands-on* evaluation.
