what does it mean check engine light comes on

engine light comes on, had it check said needed either spark plugs or wires replace both, 2 wire plugs were bad, the light stays off. next time light comes on filling up with gas. cranks over but won't start. until I pump gas peddle car start light goes off. no sign of anything .utill almost on empty then the light comes back on, put gas in the same problem as before but this time light is still on. also just to let u know when wires and plugs were changed it was reset. the computer.
