If I engage VTM-4 lock before light is on then disengage, the AWD works fine and warning light remains off. VTM-4 lock will only work if engaged while warning light is off.

11 years at a Honda dealership and I've NEVER seen a PCM (computer) replaced just because of the VTM-4 light being on! Have the A/T scanned by a Honda dealer or trusted/qualified independent tech , that has an appropriate scanner. Could be as simple as a switch. Also , is the MIL (check engine) light on?? IF YES , get that fixed first!
Thanks Ziptie, yes the MIL light is also on (code for an oxygen sensor). Because the system works if I engage the VTM-4 lock and disengage it before I do any driving I too questioned the idea of some sort of switch or sensor gone bad, but that notion seems to fall on deaf ears at my dealership. I will check with another independent tech/mechanic. Jimc1
Have MIL cause fixed , then have A/T scanned for DTCs. What drivability symptoms are present?
ZipTie, sorry so slow to give feedback. Had O2 sensor replaced and all issues disappeared. PCM is fine. Fortunately my service tech would have replaced a functioning PCM for $1300 if I had not gotten your advice first. Thanks. Jim
