What is your question?
I had my engine filter changed at Jiffy Lube when I got my oil changed at the end of January. Today, I was accelerating into traffic and my car just pretty much quit. It reduced speed down to a crawl and then stalled out. I was able to restart it and pull off the road, but later in the day when I drove, it wouldn't start easily and took awhile before it stopped the crawl/shaking and then I could drive it. The dealer says it is the result of a damaged MAP sensor. My car has 40,000 miles on it. The dealer also says this is probably the result of the filter that was put in at Jiffy Lube being incorrect and maybe too large to allow the airbox cleaner to close all the way. They are telling me it is a 600.00 fix and my extended warranty won't cover because they are blaming it on the Jiffy Lube air filter. My question is, if the airbox cleaner was open for two months, would this have happened sooner? Trying to figure out how to get this paid for. by either my extended warranty or JL.

This is a tough one because whatever we say here isn't going to be proof of anything. To better serve you let's go this route. If you MAP or MAF sensor because I believe you are referring to the mass air flow sensor, is physically damaged from a lack of air filtration you should have signs of this on the sensor. What they are getting at is that dirt or debri damaged the sensor so have them show you. If they can't show you any physical damage than I think the warranty should cover the part. Now if you don't get anywhere with that, find out if Jiffy lube did in fact install the wrong filter or installed the right one incorrectly. If that is the case than contact Jiffy lube with the estimate from the repair shop stating the sensor was damaged by the incorrect air filter. You may have to go at this at two angles to get someone else to pay for the problem. But ultimately I don't know why the repair shop isn't just submitting a claim for the sensor. It's very rare for an extended warranty company to come out and physically inspect a sensor or any repair that is only $600. Alex
What a crock of BS! The MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor can easily be cleaned and re-installed - I can not fathom how it could have possibly been damaged to the point replacement is required .. Ask to see the actual *damaged* sensor - then take it to an independent auto repair facility for a 2nd option. (Not MAP) https://youtu.be/vGOzk5ERuc4
The video link will show how simple it is to replace the air filter - *ANYONE* could do it and do so correctly! ... Ask for the air filter as well .. That’ll also need to be inspected. This whole mess just doesn’t sound right - to me! Good luck!
DO NOT pay the dealer that much for a $75.00 part that you can purchase at NAPA! And get a top quality part in the process.. Takes all of 5 minutes to install. You’re being taken for a ride!
Thanks for the reply. I will ask for both the filter and the sensor. I will watch the video. Would much rather learn how to do these things myself! Thanks Much!!
You’re entirely welcome - I hate to see anybody get a raw deal - I was in the business for many many years - never ripped anyone off - didn’t have to to earn a living. Never got rich but I could sleep good at night!
as pushrod stated! and please don't go back to JL! there was a big stink on a news channel not long ago about folks paying for work that was NOT done, but having to pay for it like it was done. so,a TV station mounted cameras all over their vehicles, engine, underneath the vehicles and sure enough they did not do the work, not ANY work at all,but got charged for the work that JL was supposed to do $$$$$! TV people had marked everything JL was supposed to do and the same parts they marked were still there when they picked it up,and also VIDEO DON'T LIE!
Thanks so much. Yes, it is the MAF sensor. I will ask if I can see it to view damage. The dealer said he also thought it was strange that an adjustor was coming out to inspect before approving the repair. I called JL and they told me they replaced the filter with the appropriate one, according to records. It seems like there is not real way to determine how the sensor was damaged - could dirt/debris damage the sensor even without a filter change?
