One loud "ping" in my dash- Now fuel gauge not keeping accurate levels-What now?

May have been over-filled and now the float is stuck. Can be scanned to see what the sending unit is actually reading , just in case it's a gauge error not the float/sending unit. The other thing to do , is to remove the fuel pump for inspection and testing.
