Agree with pushrod -- to clarify also -- the shift indicator light illuminates when it's considered to be "optimal" for economical performance to shift to the next gear. It's kind of an annoying "dummy" light that has no functional value other than giving the driver (often not wanted) advice. There are no functional malfunctions to be indicated by this light.
