Changed start.and batt. starter doesn't engage flywheel. Could new sol be bad?

Jumped while severely cold and when I put the cables on, the starter turned over without having key on yet. Friend told me starter was shot so I replaced it as well as the battery. Now it turns the starter when try to start, but only turns starter not engine.
How long has your 2001 GMC Yukon had this problem?

Rotate engine manually about 1/4 turn - try cranking with starter motor. Post results.
