Is it worth replacing the engine and water pump?

I just found out I need a new engine and water pump for my 1997 GMC Sonoma. The transmission is still in good shape. I really like the truck, but the estimate I got for the job is around $5,000, which is more than the truck is worth. If I have this done, I plan on keeping the truck for a long time. Is it a good idea, or what would you recommend?
