Sounds like just a bad or faulty sensor. Do any codes pop up?

That is information sent by the Body Control Module using information from the fuel used and miles traveled. The display module may be bad or the information is not being tabulated properly. Agree with #1, have the body/instrument module diagnosis done for your answer.
