what would cause my headlights, brights, and daylights to stop functioning

poss headlight switch has gone bad

My headlights don't work, luckily the daytime still do. It is a short in the wiring in the column, to the switch, had help and we found the short, lights turned on for awhile, but didn't have the replacement part so put it back together. the part is available, expensive, and having someone put it in, also fairly pricey I would bet, 2-3 hrs.
