What is your question?
I had my fuel pump replaced about 8,000 mi. ago which cost about $1,400. (a dealer). Now they are saying I need my fuel pump replaced but it might be the secondary pump. Can one pump go out and then later the secondary go out? My car only has 20,000 miles total on it. It's a 2002 Thunderbird.
What makes this problem better or worse?
Nothing it just died while driving it.
How long has your 2002 Ford Thunderbird had this problem?
Two days

Yes, on these dual fuel pump systems one pump is just as susceptible to failure as the other. I find it somewhat odd that both weren’t replaced at same time - especially at a dealership. Perhaps you should question that fact. Additionally I see very low vehicle milage posted so I must assume your T-Bird sits around most of the time - this can lead to condensation build up in the fuel tank - more pronounced unless tank is FULL .. I recommend having trusted local auto repair facility evaluate the issue for a second opinion - plus repair estimates. Good luck!
Hint - contaminated fuel will absolutely mimic symptoms of fuel pump failure!! Furthermore - the left side pump picks up all moisture on that side and sends it to the right side pump then it heads out to the engine.. So - fuel sampling is the most important / first step to check for water contamination!
